About
About This Site:
This is a directory list of all known mobile social networks for cellphone and mobile devices. Well, known to me, Laurel Papworth anyway.
I compiled a couple of hundred social network services for the cellphone and mobile devices in mid 2007 for a presentation at WebDirections on Mobile Social Networks. In 2006 ish I was posting on GPSLocationBasedService any gps mobile stuff on social networks I could find. In 2007 I used MyMobilePals. I’m now merging those two sites into this directory list of mobile social networks.
Method:
In the blog post: I figure out the name of the mobile social network (not always easy, if it’s part of a ’suite’ of telco products), and link from there. The Tagline is important - can sometimes describe the network or approach pretty simply. Australia means, does it have an australian service (carrier friendly?) - if it has Australian investment, entrepreneurs or is an Australian company, it’s in the Category: Australia.
Some services like Flickr are web based on the mobile so not important. iPhone App - is this a browser or widget or iPhone App service.
Description : often grabbed from the About page unless they have written it poorly or it’s missing. I try to link directly to their logos too, if they have a social media friendly site.
The voting at the top, is just for visitors to say how they feel about that particular social network service. Please add comments about how you feel too!
Once I’ve made a good indent into getting most of the main ones up here, I’ll start posting my reports and summaries and diagrams, so stay tuned.
About Laurel Papworth:
If you have any questions, want to contact me, want to be added, please try lpapworth at gmail.com or twitter.com/silkcharm. My main social network blog is at Laurel Papworth Social Networks and my professional (boring) site is laurelpapworth.com which has all my background stuff. But in case you are lazy and don’t want to click through here’s a quick summary: I started in telecomms in 1983, in private lines at Telecom Australia. Private lines became ISDN then Multimedia then Internet then global domination. In the late ’80s I worked for Universities mostly in computing and internet services (AARNET). Early ’90s saw me back in telcos this time with Optus documenting the start up of a wireline and mobile telecommunications company. I did a Grad Dip in Project Management in 1993 and started managing telco projects. I eventually worked for Cisco Systems Asia and UUNET/MCI WorldCom in Europe/Middle East. My hobbies have always (since 1989) been running social networks for games and developers. I currently consult on social networks worldwide (just got back from Saudi Arabia where I was teaching social media to Islam women!) and speak at conferences on convergence and social networks. I’m hireable and coffee-able (but busy).
